Lidiana Soto is originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, but now lives in Oregon. Her story provides insight into her journey toward identifying as an Oregonian aside from navigating her Mexican and American cultures.

Sasha Riddle studies at the School of Journalism and Communication and has a focus in multimedia storytelling.

Jill is a kindergarten teacher, MEChA leader, Spanish radio talk show host and activist in Eugene’s Latino community. Her mother is Croatian and her father Mexican, but has always identified (and questioned) her Latina identity.

Synopsis:

This is a self-reflexive film where Ariel Miranda-Katz addresses the meaning of his cultural identity as a Latino living in Oregon. Ariel’s roots are from El Salvador, but he talks about how it has been difficult for others to believe he is Latino because of his light complexity.

Synopsis:

Gabriel is an undergraduate student in archaeology and anthropology. His paternal family come from Tecolula, Puebla, Mexico. He reflects on how his paternal grandmother is the strongest person he knows. Gabriel’s describes how it was difficult growing up bicultural since his father is from Mexico and his mother is Welsh.

Gabriel describe lo difícil que fue crecer con una identidad bicultural ya que su padre es Mexicano y su madre es Galesa.

Synopsis:

Jeffrey Mercado explains how as a first generation college student, it was difficult to leave his mom who lives in Los Angeles, California. However, he fell in love with the Pacific Northwest and is a college student at the University of Oregon. Jeffrey is excited about starting a new career as a journalist and reflects on what it means to be Latino.

Synopsis:

Rosa is a sophomore at the University of Oregon and is majoring in Spanish and Latin American Studies. Rosa migrated to Oregon when she was only one year old and has struggled with the Spanish language and stereotypes about Latinos. She hopes to give back to her community of Woodburn and raise a family there.

Blanca’s story begins with her talking about her mother and family. She discusses how the English language provided her path for her to become her high school’s valedictorian, and later, a college student. Blanca talks about the cultural implications of being Latino and the way her identity is intertwined with her mother.

Synopsis:

The documentary describes Javier Lara’s journey from Mexico to Oregon and explores the transformations in identity brought about his experience as a farmworker, student and social activist. Javier tells about his commitment to giving a voice to exploited workers and outlines his efforts to work against wage theft in Oregon.

Tobin Hansen is a Spanish instructor at Oregon State University and he is beginning his doctoral degree in Anthropology at the University of Oregon.

El documental describe el viaje que Javier Lara hizo desde México a Oregón, y discute las transformaciones de identidad que tuvo de acuerdo a sus experiencias como trabajador agrícola, como estudiante y como activista social. Javier habla sobre su compromiso de trabajar para los trabajadores agrícolas que han sido explotados y de sus esfuerzos por combatir el robo salarial en Oregón.

Synopsis:

Gerardo Herrera García discusses baseball and education and explains when he moved from Culiacán, Sinaloa, México, to Medford, Oregon. He credits his accomplishment of learning English to the baseball team he joined at North Medford High School, which forced him to learn at a fast rate. Gerardo now lives in Eugene and has a baseball scholarship to Lane Community College.

Emily Greene is a double major in International Studies and Spanish, with a minor in Anthropology.

Cuenta que aprendió el Inglés durante el tiempo que fue parte del equipo de béisbol en la escuela secundaria de North Medford. Gerardo vive en Eugene y tiene una beca de béisbol en Lane Community College.

Synopsis:

Jamie Broady lives in Eugene, Oregon, and is working on a documentary of her own about Operation Pedro Pan. During the Cold War years, her father emigrated as an unaccompanied minor from Cuba under the Pedro Pan operation. Jamie did not grow up with her father and was left with many questions about her heritage. Years later, through an interview with her father Juan Lorente Reyes, Jamie has gotten to know more about him and herself in the process.

 

Producer/Director bio:

Irma Jolene Fisher is first year doctoral student in Media Studies. She studies international and development communication, and her research focuses on the use of online and mobile phone games as development tools.
